Mosaic

HISTORY REVEALED & RESTORED

This exuberant, 40-by-18½-foot mosaic mural was created by noted mosaic artist Max Spivak (1906-1981) and completed in 1958. Composed of a quarter-million hand-cut glass tiles, or tesserae, the mural was uncovered in 2015 by renovation crews as they stripped away a false front in the entrance vestibule of 5 Bryant Park. It had been hidden for many years by metal panels, following a modernization effort designed to give the building’s entrance a more contemporary, corporate look. After its surprise unveiling, the mural was meticulously repaired by well-known mosaic craftsman Stephen Miotto, whose godfather, Carlo Rett, may have worked with Mr. Spivak on the original commission in 1958.

Spivak’s forms look abstract at first glance, floating on a straw-gold field. Upon closer inspection, however, they are revealed to be various tools of garment designers and garment makers, the very types of tenants who would have first occupied this building, originally known as 111 West 40th Street, when it opened in 1957.
